Google Performance Max Is Now Auto-Sourcing Videos From Your Social Media: What Ecommerce Brands Must Audit Right Now

On October 21, 2026, Google announced two new asset optimization settings for Performance Max campaigns that give the platform significantly more authority to source creative assets automatically. For ecommerce brands running PMax, this means Google can now add up to 10 videos pulled from your social media accounts, campaign landing pages, and linked YouTube channels, doubling the previous five-asset manual cap and potentially running creative you have never reviewed or approved in your highest-spend campaigns.

What Does Google's PMax Auto-Sourcing Change Mean for Your Campaigns?

Google's two new settings are called "Landing page images" and "Sourced videos." Landing page images pulls product and lifestyle photos directly from your website URLs and inserts them as active PMax creative assets. Sourced videos goes further, pulling videos from any online channel connected to your Google account, including social media profiles, landing pages, and linked YouTube channels. Because Sourced videos can be enabled automatically without advertiser action, brands may already be serving these externally sourced assets without realizing it.

How Does Google Automatically Source Video Assets for Performance Max?

When Sourced videos is active, Google's crawlers identify video content associated with your domain and linked accounts, then automatically add up to 10 videos to your active asset groups. The previous manual upload limit was five videos per asset group, so this effectively doubles the creative pool Google has to work with. Ads using these auto-sourced assets will carry an "edited with AI" label in the EU, India, and New York state, adding a compliance layer that brands operating in those markets need to actively manage.

For ecommerce brands with large YouTube libraries or active social channels, the sourced video pool can include product tutorials, behind-the-scenes content, unboxing videos, or older campaign content that was never intended to run as paid advertising. Google's algorithm will test these assets against your current approved creative and allocate budget based on performance signals, which means off-brand or outdated content can actively compete with your curated BFCM assets.

What Creative Risks Come with Auto-Sourced PMax Videos for Ecommerce Brands?

The highest-risk scenario for ecommerce brands heading into BFCM is loss of creative control at the moment when creative quality matters most. Auto-sourced videos bypass your review process entirely. If your linked YouTube channel contains unpolished product tests, expired promotional videos with outdated pricing, or content from past campaigns with discontinued SKUs, those assets can now be served to your highest-intent prospecting audiences during your most competitive and expensive ad period of the year.

A secondary risk is creative strength dilution. Google scores each asset group on creative strength, a signal that influences how aggressively PMax allocates budget. Low-quality auto-sourced assets pull down that score. Brands that go into BFCM with a fragmented asset group, where strong approved creative shares space with auto-pulled legacy content, may see less efficient spend than competitors with tight, curated asset libraries. What Should You Do Now with Google's PMax Auto-Sourcing Update?

  1. Open Google Ads and navigate to each active Performance Max campaign. Click into each asset group and open Asset optimization settings. Check whether "Sourced videos" is enabled. If it is, review every video Google has added to the asset list and remove any that are off-brand, outdated, or not approved for paid media.
  2. Check "Landing page images" and audit what website photos are being pulled. Any image accessible on your campaign landing pages, including old product shots, lifestyle imagery from past seasons, or placeholder images, is a candidate for auto-sourcing. Update your landing pages to ensure every accessible image meets your current creative standards.
  3. Audit all channels linked to your Google Ads account. Go to your Google Ads account settings and review all linked YouTube channels, Google Business Profiles, and social accounts. For any YouTube channel linked to your account, review the full video library and unlist or delete any content you do not want appearing as paid creative. Unlisted videos cannot be sourced; private videos on YouTube also cannot be used as PMax assets.
  4. Replace removed assets immediately with approved BFCM creative. If you disable or remove auto-sourced assets, your creative strength score may dip temporarily. Upload your approved holiday video assets directly to the asset group to recover the score before BFCM traffic ramps up. Google's recommended spec is 1920x1080 for video assets in PMax.
  5. Mark your calendar for December 4, 2026. Google confirmed a related change: starting December 4, image extraction (GENERATE_IMAGE_EXTRACTION) will be enabled by default for all newly created Performance Max campaigns. Any PMax campaigns you launch during or after BFCM will have AI image generation turned on automatically. Disable it in Asset optimization settings if you want to control creative entirely with brand-approved imagery.

How Does the December 4 Default Change Affect New PMax Campaigns?

For brands that launch new PMax campaigns as part of a post-BFCM or new year strategy, GENERATE_IMAGE_EXTRACTION being on by default means Google will automatically create image assets using AI based on your campaign context. This is separate from Sourced videos. While AI-generated images can perform well for some ecommerce use cases, brands with strict creative guidelines or high-end visual standards should disable the setting and supply their own imagery from day one rather than retroactively removing AI-generated assets after they have already served and accumulated performance data.

If you are working with a performance creative team, CTC's Google Ads team can help you build an asset group structure that gives Google enough creative variation to optimize effectively while keeping full control over brand-approved content heading into the holiday season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I disable auto-sourced videos in Performance Max?

Yes. Navigate to your PMax asset group, open Asset optimization settings, and disable "Sourced videos." Be aware that disabling the setting does not automatically remove videos Google has already added. You must manually delete those from the asset group. After removing them, upload your approved video assets directly to maintain creative strength scores.

Which channels does Google pull sourced videos from for PMax?

Google can source videos from linked YouTube channels, campaign landing pages, and other online channels associated with your domain or Google Ads account. Any YouTube channel linked to your Google Ads manager account is a potential source. Public videos are eligible; unlisted and private videos are not. Social media channels connected via Google's platform may also be eligible depending on your account configuration.

Will removing auto-sourced assets hurt my PMax performance?

Removing low-quality or off-brand assets may temporarily lower your creative strength score, but it gives you control over what Google serves. The better approach is to remove unwanted assets and immediately replace them with strong, approved creative. High-quality, on-brand video assets with clear BFCM messaging will recover your creative strength score and give Google better material to optimize from before peak traffic arrives.

What is the difference between Sourced videos and Google's AI image generation in PMax?

Sourced videos pulls existing video content from your linked accounts and landing pages. AI image generation (GENERATE_IMAGE_EXTRACTION) creates new images from scratch using Google's AI based on your campaign context and products. Both are automated. Both can be disabled in Asset optimization settings. Sourced videos is live now and may already be active in your campaigns. The AI image generation default goes live for newly created PMax campaigns starting December 4, 2026.
