On October 26, 2026, Shopify launched its built-in Knowledge Base directly inside every merchant's admin, replacing the standalone Knowledge Base app that will be discontinued on January 15, 2027. For ecommerce brands heading into Black Friday and Cyber Monday, this means the structured facts AI shopping agents use to represent your store, including contact details, gift services, shipping policies, and return terms, now live under a single tab in the Shopify admin, and stores that had more than 1,000 facts in the old app need to manually migrate before the January 15 deadline.
AI shopping agents, including those built into search engines and Shopify's own Shop channel, pull structured facts about your store when answering customer queries. Shopify now drafts these facts automatically from your published storefront, but nothing reaches any AI agent until you review and explicitly publish each fact. If you do not publish your Knowledge Base before BFCM, AI agents surfacing your store to shoppers may display inaccurate, incomplete, or generic information at the exact moment those shoppers are deciding where to buy.
The Knowledge Base is a structured set of facts about your store that Shopify surfaces to AI agents, covering information such as gift services, shipping policies, contact details, return policies, and product availability. Until October 26, 2026, managing these facts required installing a separate app. Shopify has now made it a native feature, accessible at Sales channels > Agentic > Knowledge base in every merchant's admin.
Shopify automatically drafts facts from your existing storefront pages. The critical detail: nothing Shopify drafted is live to any AI agent until you explicitly publish it. Every Shopify merchant needs to open the Knowledge Base tab, review the auto-generated drafts for accuracy, and publish the ones that are correct before peak season traffic arrives.
The built-in Knowledge Base holds up to 1,000 facts per store. Stores that used the now-deprecated standalone app and had fewer than 1,000 facts have had those facts automatically migrated and published. Stores with more than 1,000 facts have not been migrated and need to manually add their facts before January 15, 2027, when the old app will be permanently removed.
For brands running 7, 8, or 9-figure ecommerce operations, this is one of the highest-leverage 20-minute tasks available before BFCM. AI-driven shopping discovery is accelerating, and the brands that have accurate, published Knowledge Base facts are the ones AI agents will confidently surface to shoppers comparing options. Brands without published facts get omitted or misrepresented. For more on how we help brands optimize every layer of their digital storefront for peak season, see how CTC's Prophit Engine works.
Shopify has been building what it calls "agentic storefronts," a set of tools that allow AI agents to interact with your store on behalf of shoppers. The Knowledge Base is the foundation of this system. It is the source of truth that tells AI agents what your store offers, how your policies work, and how to reach you.
Shopify's earlier shop.md update established how AI agents discover your store. The Knowledge Base controls what those agents actually say about it once they find it. Together, these two tools represent the most significant infrastructure shift in ecommerce discovery since the rise of structured data markup. Brands that set both up before BFCM are building a direct pipeline between their store's facts and the AI agents millions of shoppers will use this holiday season.
Also relevant for your BFCM prep: Shopify recently updated its compare-at price sharing with AI shopping agents, meaning your sale prices and promotions are already being surfaced to agentic channels. Make sure the context those agents have about your store, via the Knowledge Base, accurately reflects your BFCM offer structure.

Structured data markup and meta descriptions feed search engine crawlers for traditional search results. The Shopify Knowledge Base feeds AI agents directly, in a structured fact-by-fact format that conversational AI systems can query and respond to during real-time shopper interactions. Think of it as the difference between a resume posted publicly online and a direct briefing document handed to someone answering live questions about your business. Both matter, and they feed entirely different discovery systems.
No. The Knowledge Base feeds AI agents and agentic commerce channels, not traditional search engine crawlers. Your existing SEO setup, including structured data, meta descriptions, and sitemaps, continues to function independently. The Knowledge Base is an additional layer that controls your AI-facing storefront only.
If you do not publish your facts, AI shopping agents that encounter your store will either surface nothing, display outdated information from unpublished drafts, or present generic data that does not reflect your actual policies. During BFCM, when shoppers are actively comparing options through AI-assisted discovery, having inaccurate or missing Knowledge Base facts is a meaningful competitive disadvantage.
No action is required to get access. Shopify has already drafted facts from your storefront and made them available in your admin at Sales channels > Agentic > Knowledge base. You do not need to install anything. Simply review the auto-generated drafts and publish the ones that are accurate for your store.
The standalone Knowledge Base app will no longer be available after January 15, 2027. Stores with fewer than 1,000 facts in the app have had those facts automatically migrated to the new built-in Knowledge Base and published. Stores with more than 1,000 facts have not been migrated. Shopify has emailed those stores directly. If your store is in the over-1,000-facts category, you need to manually add your remaining facts before January 15, 2027.
Not significantly. The built-in Knowledge Base is available to all Shopify plans. Shopify Plus merchants have additional flexibility through Checkout UI extensions and advanced agentic storefront configurations, but the Knowledge Base setup process is the same. All merchants should complete the review-and-publish workflow before BFCM regardless of plan tier.
Setting up your Shopify Knowledge Base is one of the highest-leverage actions available to ecommerce brands in the next week.
